Great progress is being made in the Dagger Point Shoreline Protection Project at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.
For years, waves and storms have been eroding the bluff of Dagger Point on the Blackjack Peninsula, pulling soil and trees into San Antonio Bay, and losing vital habitat for wildlife, including the endangered whooping crane. To protect the vital coastal land, a breakwater structure is being built along five miles of the shoreline; this will slow wave energy before it meets the shore.
Visit the refuge and see the conservation work underway. You can view the construction from the fishing pier, or the boardwalk and observation towers.
